ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) is proud to announce the release of a powerful new documentary, "From Stigma to Strength: Georgia is the Birthplace of the Certified Peer Specialist Movement." 

This film highlights the transformative journeys of certified peer specialists in Georgia, showcasing their resilience and the vital role they play in mental health recovery and support. 

"From Stigma to Strength" delves into the personal stories of certified peer specialists like Ruth Naomi Escamilla, who have overcome significant challenges to become beacons of hope for others. 

The documentary underscores Georgia's leadership in pioneering the certified peer specialist movement and emphasizes the state's commitment to mental health and addiction recovery. 

“This documentary is a testament to the incredible strength and resilience of our peer specialists,” said DBHDD Commissioner Kevin Tanner. “It highlights not only their personal journeys but also the critical role they play in our mental health system. Georgia has been at the forefront of this movement, and we are honored to share these stories of hope and recovery." 

Wendy Tiegreen, one of the pioneers of the certified peer specialist movement in Georgia, also shared her enthusiasm. 

“The release of 'From Stigma to Strength' is a significant milestone for our state,” said Tiegreen. “It showcases the profound impact that certified peer specialists have on individuals and communities. Their lived experiences and dedication to helping others are truly inspiring, and this documentary beautifully captures their spirit." 

The documentary features candid interviews and poignant moments that illustrate the transformative power of peer support. 

It aims to reduce stigma around mental health and addiction, highlighting that recovery is possible with the right support and resources. 

"From Stigma to Strength: Georgia is the Birthplace of the Certified Peer Specialist Movement" will premiere at a special event hosted by DBHDD on August 8, 2024, at 5 p.m. at the Carter Center in Atlanta. The event will include a screening of the documentary, followed by a panel discussion with some of the featured peer specialists and mental health advocates.
