      Status Report

June 29, 2018
On June 29, 2018, the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a joint status report in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia pursuant to their 2010 Settlement Agreement.
In the time since the original agreement was signed, DBHDD’s system has undergone a significant transformation.  A once fragmented and inconsistent system is now a robust, statewide community-based system of care.
Since 2011, Georgia has invested $256 million new dollars into expanding our crisis system, which serves some of Georgia’s most vulnerable citizens.  In the filing, DBHDD and the DOJ expressed collaborative efforts to ensure that Georgia continues to enhance its public safety net for community mental health and developmental disability services.
While the Settlement Agreement was set to end June 30, 2018, the parties acknowledged that some of the data which supports DBHDD’s compliance with the agreement is not yet available.  Once the data is available, the court’s independent reviewer will prepare a report covering the final six months of the settlement term.  The report is expected to be filed with the court in the fall of 2018.  Following the filing of the report, the parties will be able to inform the court about Georgia’s compliance with the agreement.
As we enter into the future, we are committed to continuous improvement of our entire system, and to holding ourselves – and our providers – accountable for meeting the needs of the people we serve in an evolving health care environment.

DBHDD has released a priority plan which represents the longstanding and ongoing commitment of the State of Georgia and its Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) to improve quality and address gaps in the system of supports and services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) with a focus on capacity building, accountability and sustainability.
This work involves a wide array of activities that will result in a system change that will lead to improved outcomes for the people we serve.
