Mableton, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) will kick off Georgia’s Red Ribbon Week on Thursday, October 22, 2015. Each year, Red Ribbon Week, celebrated October 23-31, brings schools and communities together to demonstrate their commitment to living free of drugs. This year’s Red Ribbon theme is: Respect Yourself.  Be Drug Free.

During Red Ribbon Week, youth and community leaders hold events to educate Georgians about the dangers of drug use and alcohol abuse. However, Red Ribbon is not an isolated week of prevention activities. It is an awareness campaign that is an integral part of a year-round focus on safe alternatives to drinking and using other drugs.

The kickoff will feature acts by many of the participating schools, as well as a special performance by an Atlanta-based hip hop star, who has recently achieved national fame. Miss Georgia 2015 Adeline Kenerly and DBHDD Commissioner Frank Berry will speak at the event. The department expects more than 1,500 children from schools across Georgia to attend.
