Goals
- To support persons with severe and persistent mental illness within a residential setting that assists them to successfully maintain housing stability in the community, continue with their recovery, and increase self-sufficiency.
- To assist individuals with an intensive need for personal supports and skills training to restore, develop, or maintain skills in functional areas in order to live meaningful lives in the community.
- To assist individuals with an intensive need for personal supports and skills training, develop and maintain social relationships, and participate in social, interpersonal, vocational, recreational, and/or community activities.
- To expand opportunities for self-determination, empowerment, and community integration.
- To provide cost-effective alternatives in lieu of hospitalization which promote independence, choice making, wellness, and linkages to community resources and/or natural supports.
- To provide skills training and support activities to prepare individuals to transition to independent residential living.
Scope of Services
Central Care Community Services is an organizational unit of Central State Hospital. Central Care provides Intensive Residential Services to adults aged 18 or older with severe and persistent mental illnesses who may have co-occurring addictive diseases diagnosis. Additionally, persons served have a history of frequent psychiatric hospitalizations or incarcerations/legal entanglements; require a highly supportive environment with 24/7 awake staff to divert them from going to a more intensive level of care; display symptoms/behaviors indicating a need for continuous monitoring and supervision by 24/7 awake staff to ensure safety; and/or possess insufficient or severely limited skills needed to maintain stable housing with unsuccessful attempts using less intensive residential supports. Around the clock assistance and supports are provided to individuals served to assist them to maintain successful community housing stability while moving towards recovery and self-sufficiency.
Central Care began operations in August 2002, and the first home to support individuals with mental illness opened in November 2005. Central Care is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (The Joint Commission). Central Care currently operates seven Community Living Arrangements (CLA) with a capacity for serving 36 individuals with severe and persistent mental illness.
- Saint Paul Home in Macon, GA is a Forensic Community Integrated Home (CIH) serving women transitioned from Forensic Services;
- Oglethorpe Home A (Milledgeville), Oglethorpe Home B (Milledgeville), Edwards Apartments (Milledgeville), and North Avenue Home (Macon) provide Intensive Residential Services (ITR) to men; and
- Charlton Home (Milledgeville) and Ingleside Home (Macon) provide ITR services to women.
The Central Care Community Homes provide cost-effective alternatives to hospitalization and opportunities for the individuals served to develop and realize new levels of independence, responsibility, and community involvement.
The individuals that are served receive skills training each week (e.g., interpersonal skills training, coping skills/problem solving, symptom identification and management, cooking, maintaining a residence, using public transportation, shopping, budgeting, and/or other needed skills training) that relate to the individual’s Individualized Recovery Plan (IRP). Support activities are provided on a daily basis, including daily contacts by residential staff to monitor physical and mental health needs, crisis intervention as needed, assistance with scheduling of medical and mental health appointments, the supervision of the self-administration of medications, transportation to medical/dental/mental health/day programming/employment/recreational activities, participation in community activities, assistance as needed with housekeeping chores, and other needed supports as identified in the IRP.

Forensic Services
Mission
The mission of Forensic Services is to provide state-of-the-art forensic, psychiatric and mental health evaluation, treatment and recovery services in a safe, secure and therapeutic environment for the individuals we serve.
Forensic Services serves clients who are referred for psychiatric evaluation and treatment from various components of the state's criminal justice and corrections systems. While the program's inpatient units have greater security measures than are found on general psychiatric units, the client treatment services are carried out in accordance with the same professional care standards that apply to general psychiatric (non-forensic) units.
Forensic Services is comprised of five secure forensic inpatient units and three maximum secure forensic inpatient units in the Cook Building. CSH’s Forensic Services Program operates the only maximum secure forensic units in the state. The program operates 184 beds.
Forensic Services serves the following individuals:
- Those who are committed to CSH by the criminal justice system for pre-trial psychiatric evaluation and/or inpatient treatment;
- Those who have been found not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI) at the time of commission of a crime or have been found mentally incompetent to stand trial (IST);
- Those who are admitted with hold orders from jails for psychiatric evaluation, treatment and stabilization.
Forensic Services also conducts court-ordered pre-trial evaluations on an outpatient basis in jails.
Forensic Services is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (The Joint Commission).
