Central State Hospital (CSH), is a maximum secure Forensics facility which provides state of the art multi-disciplinary services including psychiatric evaluation, treatment and recovery services for persons referred from the state’s criminal justice and corrections systems. In addition, CSH provides staff-supervised residential homes in the community serving individuals with behavioral health disorders (Central Care Community Services). Central State Hospital is proud to be continuously accredited by the Joint Commission since 1983.

With recent downsizing, CSH is moving toward a more specialized inpatient psychiatric care module for Forensic inpatients in a maximum secure facility. With this defined focus, CSH is now composed of three buildings: Payton Cook Building (Forensic inpatients), Allen Building (Administration) and the Tharpe Building (Dental Services). CSH Scope Of Services

Forensic Inpatient Services

The forensic inpatient program at CSH includes a 182-bed maximum secure facility which serves individuals throughout the State of Georgia. The forensic population includes individuals admitted for:

  • Pre-trial evaluations
  • Restoration to competency to stand trial (IST)
  • Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI).

Central Care Community Services

Central Care Community Services (CCCS) is an organizational unit of Central State Hospital and fully accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC). CCCS provides intensive residential services to adults aged 18 or older with Severe and Persistent Mental Illnesses, who also may be diagnosed with Co-occurring Addictive Diseases. The Individuals served have a history of frequent psychiatric hospitalizations, incarcerations and legal issues.

CCCS operates seven Community Living Arrangements (CLA), serving 37 individuals. CLAs provide Individuals highly supportive residential environments, so they may transition successfully into the community. CLAs have 24/7 awake staff for safety, continuous supervision, monitoring, and assistance. CCCS provides a cost-effective alternative to hospitalization, and it fosters opportunities for Individuals to develop and realize new levels of independence, responsibility and community involvement.

CCCS Mission: To provide easy access to high-quality Intensive Residential Services that empower the persons we serve to lead a life of recovery and independence.

CCCS Vision: A high-quality life in the community for each individual served, through the provision of effective and accountable services and supports that meet the individual's needs and preferences.

Dental Services

CSH provides dental services to the individuals of CSH, individuals in the community with intellectual developmental disabilities, and individuals in the community with mental health issues residing in state managed group homes.

Visitation

Daily Visitation Hours:
1:00 pm – 3:00 pm and 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Visitation strengthens family connections, aids in the recovery process, and, when possible, increases the likelihood of a successful return to the community. Due to the nature of Forensic services, the combined need to maintain security, and to manage psychiatric illness, additional restrictions are required.
